Regular use of a title makes an author or publisher the owner of the title. Before publishing a novel, publishers usually clarify with the author which title should be used for the work. In most cases, the title of a work is determined by the publisher, as it mainly serves marketing purposes. In the case of cinematographic works, the rights to the title belong to the producer, who usually chooses it alone. Before title protection is granted, the term »work title« is often used to emphasize the provisional status and to avoid confusion. Other works may also be designated with the additional designation »work title.« It is important to emphasize here that the work may have a different title when it goes on sale.
